Description
Horny goat weed has been touted as a sexual enhancer and has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The name supposedly stems from a herder, who noticed his flock of goats becoming increasingly sexually active after eating the plant!
First referenced around 1200 BC in a passage in the Shen Nong herbal book of remedies, Horny Goat weed was used to treat impotence and pains, to increase urination and to boost the ‘qi’, or life force.
More recently, use of horny goat weed grew out of an increasing demand for dietary supplements to enhance sexual function in ageing generations.
It is believed to restore male sexual function, although the way it does this is not fully understood. However, based on animal studies, multiple activities of the herb are likely contribute to enhanced sexual function, including peripheral circulatory, vasodilatory, androgenic and neurological activity.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, horny goat weed is used to help treat chronic bronchitis and asthma and other respiratory problems.
